so... HamRadioNow...

HamRadioNow is an online television show, a webcast, an audio podcast, a YouTube show... Whatever you want to call it, it's for and about Amateur Radio.  Our hosts are David Goldenberg W0DHG in the West Coast Studio, Gary Pearce K4AAQ in the East Coast Studio and Jim Aspinwall NO1PC at the NorCal Anchor Desk, with occasional help from a few other ham radio luminaries.

Gary's been a ham for since 1965 (he’s rumored to have given Marconi his Novice test, but it’s not true. He gave Tesla his Novice test), and a broadcaster for almost that long. David's a little newer, but he's dived head first into EmComm and public service. Jim is a mystery (until we drag some bio from him), though we know he hails from the Madison WI area.

If you look over past episodes, you’ll see we had kind of an identity problem.

  • Sometimes we're a talk show, with guests from across the Ham Radio spectrum (little joke there) via Zoom. Gary thinks he does the best interviews in ham radio media, but that's really your call, isn't it? That’s mostly what we are today. We don’t do many unboxings or product reviews.

  • Over the years, Gary hauled the gear out on location to do a magazine-style show at a hamfest, or mini-documentary out there someplace. Not often... that's a whole lot more work. And it's a lot more expensive. And now he’s kinda old. But never say never.

  • We presented forums and seminars from various Amateur Radio events like hamfests and conferences. That's expensive and extremely time consuming. We’re in KISS mode now.

  • Sometimes it's just strange stuff, like one of us pointing a camera out the window of his car while he drives cross-country, talking on the radio, or just talking to the audience. And those shows get the most favorable comments. Maybe we’ll do more, if it’s easy.

  • We’ve done some EmComm Extra episodes that have an EmComm focus. (No, there's nothing 'extra' about them... we just like alliteration). We’ll certainly do more Emcomm oriented shows. We may not point it out with a special title.

So you never know what's coming next, though once in a while we'll talk about it, or give you a heads-up on our Facebook Group or Twitter. Well, we haven’t twitted in a long time.

In the early days, the show was recorded and edited (a little or a lot, depending). We experimented with live just before Gary took his break in 2018, and now we’re live for almost every show. The current schedule is Sunday night at 7pm Pacific, 10pm Eastern, 0200 or 0300Z (that works out to Monday morning, and it’s 0200Z during US Daylight Time - North America’s summer - and 0300Z during US Standard Time - North America’s winter). You can still watch the show whenever you want, either right here on our Episode Pages, or on our YouTube Channel. It's all the same stuff. Or you can download just the audio and listen on your phone with our RSS feed.

Finally, our YouTube chat-mod Jeff N4POD set us up with a Discord server (that’s a place to go and chat, text or A/V). It’s a hoppin’, happen’n … um, well, kinda quiet place, but a few of the regulars jump on after a show. Sometimes a host or two. http://discord.gg/FDP3JnyDun

* The most important Amateur Radio program on the Internet?
A totally bogus, empty, made-up claim that sounds really good.
